A European wasp nest near a fire exit, loading dock, outdoor staff area, playground or public footpath creates an immediate sting risk to staff, customers and members of the public โ and the occupier of the site carries the duty of care. Unlike many pest issues, a wasp nest cannot wait for the next scheduled service: paper wasp and European wasp colonies become aggressively defensive as they grow through spring and summer, and a single disturbance event can put multiple people in hospital.
Commercial sites attract wasps for structural reasons. Wall voids, eaves, awning channels, roller-door housings, cable trays, shipping container gaps and roof cavities all provide sheltered nest sites, while outdoor food areas, waste docks and sugary liquids around beverage handling provide forage. Sites near parkland, bushland and waterways โ including many Sydney business parks and schools โ see heavy seasonal pressure from October through to April.
The liability is compounded by response failures. Untrained staff attempting DIY removal is one of the most common causes of multiple-sting incidents on work sites. Every nest event needs a licensed technician, an exclusion zone, the correct treatment method for the species and nest location, and a written record so the incident can be closed out properly in your WHS register.
Same-day or next-day attendance for active nests, with phone triage to assess species, size and access before we arrive.
We set and communicate exclusion zones around the nest so staff, students and the public are kept clear during treatment.
Nests near entries, docks and public areas are treated outside operating hours wherever possible so business continues uninterrupted.
Entry points into wall voids, eaves and roof cavities are sealed after treatment to prevent recolonisation of the same harbourage.
Spring inspections of eaves, awnings, voids and outdoor structures to catch new nests while they are small and cheap to treat.
Species, location, treatment method and re-entry advice recorded in a written report suitable for WHS registers and insurer queries.
Redback responds to wasp and bee events from dispatch hubs covering the Sydney metropolitan area and the Macarthur and south-west corridor, which keeps attendance times short for schools, hospitals, shopping centres, business parks and industrial estates from the CBD to Campbelltown and Penrith.
We attend wasp events for education, government, healthcare, retail, logistics and strata clients under both scheduled programs and reactive callout arrangements, and we are a registered NSW Government supplier (ABN 50 664 332 852) actively engaged in public-sector procurement.
